St. James Preschool

PHILOSOPHY           
St. James Preschool offers a program to preschool age children which is designed to foster the development of the whole child – emotionally, socially, intellectually and physically.  The program endeavors to provide a nurturing setting that helps children transition from the protected family environment to the wider community.  Emphasis is on the child’s uniqueness, and on developing a positive self-image.  Our program stresses individual growth and learning through discovery, with a “hands on” approach.

WHO
St. James Preschool is non-sectarian, welcoming boys and girls of all creeds and races from 2½ to 5 years old. The staff is composed of six certified teachers and five trained assistant teachers. The Preschool is licensed by the State of NJ.  The Preschool has been operating at St. James’ Church for 22 years, and the Pre-K program since 1995.   Our Board of Trustees comprises parents, church members and a representative of the church Vestry.

WHAT
Children can spend one, two or thee years at St. James in a variety of developmentally appropriate curricula.

Multi-age Program     9:00a.m.—1:00 p.m.    3, 4, or 5 days
2 ½ to 4 years      
There are 30 children per day with three certified teachers and two assistant teachers.

Young Fours               9:00 a.m.—1:30 p.m.   4 or 5 days
Children attaining age 4 between April 1 and December 1
Hands-on experience aimed at children who may not be ready for the full-day Pre-K program (below) but would enjoy more teacher-directed activities and a slightly longer day than the Multi-age Program.  Class size of 13 children with a teacher and assistant.

Full Day Pre-K            9:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m.   4 or 5 days
4 and 5 years (Children must turn 4 prior to October 1 and plan to attend Kindergarten the following year.)
Provides a stimulating, thematic and hands-on approach to math and science concepts, social studies, writing, pre-reading, music and movement.  Teacher-directed activities help develop skills, and community focus occurs through walking trips around the Upper Montclair neighborhood.  Class size of 13 children with a teacher and assistant.
