About the Episcopal Church

Picture
We Episcopalians believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God:  Father, Son, and HolySpirit.  We believe in following the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death and ressurection saved the world.

Formed out of the colonial congregations separated from the Church of England after the American Revolution, the Episcopal Church is an autonomous province of the worldwide Anglican Communion, the third largest group of Christians in the world.

All are welcome to find a spiritual home in the Episcopal Church, the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement.

Newcomers' Events

Our desire is to make people feel welcome at St. James Church. The ushers and the service bulletin can help you follow the worship service, and the clergy are happy to meet with you to learn more about who you are and your faith journey. Coffee hour, a time for refreshments and the opportunity to meet people, is held in the parish hall folllowing the second service. Adult forums, offered between the services at 9:15 a.m, are an opportunity to learn more about the church, to meet people, and to hear the views of others on a given topic, including a series developed to help newcomers learn about the Episcopal traditon.

The Newcomers’ Brunch helps us all get to know one another. This event is held twice a year.

About the Diocese of Newark

The Diocese of Newark is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion represented in the United States (as well as other parts of the world) by The Episcopal Church.  It was established in 1874 as the Diocese of Northern New Jersey by the third bishop of New Jersey, William Henry Odenheimer, who then became its first Bishop.  In 1886, the diocese changed its name to the Diocese of Newark.

The diocese comprises the northern third of New Jersey, with congregations in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Warren, and Union counties. There are 93 congregations and 4 affiliated worshipping communities located in the Diocese of Newark.  Our worship and liturgical expression is vibrant and varies, ranging from Anglo-Catholic to liberation to conservative to liberal Protestant to Evangelical.
